Book a group study room
Employees and students of Icelandic universities can book group study rooms on the museum's website. The rooms are located on the 3rd and 4th floors of the National Library and seat 3-10 people. Please note that the minimum group size for booking a group study room is three people.

Library card
Library cards are issued at the service desk on the 2nd floor upon presentation of photo ID and social security number. Library cards are included in the tuition fees for students at the University of Iceland, UI employees receive cards free of charge, while others pay an annual fee according to the fee schedule. International students at the University of Iceland must complete a request for a library card.
Library cards are issued to individuals and the cardholder is fully responsible for the materials they borrow. If library materials are lost or damaged in the borrower's custody, they must pay the value of the materials. For more information, contact utlan@landsbokasafn.is or call 525 5681.

Loan renewal
Loans can be renewed up to 6 times if another borrower is not waiting for the material. By logging in to lbs.leitir.is, borrowers can renew their loans. See the leitir.is guide for more information.
Remote access, VPN connections
The library and University of Iceland subscription databases are only accessible on the university network. If a computer is not connected to the university network, various connections and other options may be blocked. University of Iceland employees and students can use the data outside the university network with a VPN connection, see more.
Distance learners
Those registered for distance learning at the University of Iceland have the same rights as other students at the university, and efforts are made to provide them with comparable service. Distance learners outside the capital area can have books sent by post, and the library pays the postage one way. Requests for book deliveries can be sent to utlan@landsbokasafn.is or contact the lending department at 525 5681.
Reservations
In order to reserve material, the borrower must be logged in to leitir.is (lbs.leitir.is) with their password. See the leitir.is guide for more information.
The EndNote citation management program
The University of Iceland has an EndNote license for students and staff. EndNote is a program that helps you manage sources, make references in text, and create bibliographies according to a specific standard. The program can be connected to Word and automatically insert references and sources into documents. EndNote saves time and makes reference work much easier. The program works with both Windows and Mac operating systems, installation instructions.
Material recalls and fines
A reminder of the due date is usually sent to the borrower's email address. However, it is entirely the borrower's responsibility to ensure that the material is returned on time. Users can renew their loans themselves by logging in to lbs.leitir.is with their password. If the material is returned after the loan period expires, daily fines are paid according to the Library Services Fee Schedule. The National Library – University Library sends a recall letter twice after the due date. If this recall is unsuccessful, the data is collected by Motus.

Rent a storage locker
The library has 144 lockers. Most of the lockers are for guests who use the library regularly and want to store their materials there from day to day over a longer period of time, up to a semester. Keys are handed over at the service desk on the 2nd floor upon presentation of a library card and payment of a security deposit, see Fees. The security deposit is refunded when the key is returned. On the 2nd floor there are lockers that are rented out for shorter periods of time, 1-2 days. Rent a reading room
On the 3rd and 4th floors there are 26 reading rooms, which are primarily intended for academics, postgraduate students at university level and others who are working on specific projects and need to use the library's publications for that purpose. The reading rooms can be rented for a month at a time. Applications for a reading room must be made on special forms (see rules for allocation and see Fees).
Photocopying and scanning
On the 1st floor in the Icelandic Collection: Staff make photocopies of the collection materials for users. There is a charge for each page (see Fees). On the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors there are photocopiers that are also scanners. Users need a photocopier card to be able to use the machines. They are sold at the service desk on the 2nd floor (see Fees).
Password, login to lbs.leitir.is
Borrowers choose a password on lbs.leitir.is. The password is used to register on "my pages" on lbs.leitir.is. Once a borrower has registered, they can renew materials, view their loan history, and reserve materials. More detailed instructions are provided in the leitir.is guide.
University of Iceland Course reserve
The Course reserve is located on the 3rd floor of the National Library. Books and other materials from the Course reserve can be used in the library or borrowed for one to fourteen days. Students are encouraged to find out whether teachers of individual courses use the Course reserve to facilitate access to textbooks, supplementary materials and articles on the reading list. Other University of Iceland libraries
The library operates a library for the Faculty of Law of the University of Iceland on the 3rd floor in Lögberg. The School of Education has its own library in Stakkahlíð and the Health Sciences Library of Landspítali and the University of Iceland is in Eirberg, Landspítali at Hringbraut.
Order an interlibrary loan
The library provides its users with books and journal articles from other university and research libraries. Instructions on how users can order books and articles are in the Interlibrary Loans guide. The library is also the national center for interlibrary loans, is a facilitator for interlibrary loans from domestic libraries, and is also the library that foreign libraries approach for interlibrary loans from Iceland. Printers
On the 2nd floor at the service desk: All printing from computers on the 2nd floor that users have access to. Payment is required for each page (see Library Services Fee Schedule). Color printing is not available for general users. On the 3rd floor: For students and employees of the University of Iceland. Black/white printing. The cost of printing is deducted from the Ugla printing quota.
Electronic statement on the handling of final theses, form
In addition to a copy of the final theses, the student must submit an electronic declaration to Skemman about how access to their project should be handled. Print the form, fill it out, sign it, and submit it in PDF format to Skemman as a separate document with the thesis in step 2. Multiple files can be uploaded there, but only one at a time.
Book purchases, ordering materials, suggestions
The library is responsible for purchasing publications for the H.Í library purchase fund. Students, scholars and other users of the library can also make suggestions for book purchases.
Skemman, an electronic archive
Skemman is a digital archive of final theses by students at undergraduate and master's level. The goal of Skemman is, among other things, to open access to academic material to as many people as possible, and students are encouraged to keep their theses open. Some departments have set rules regarding access to final theses, and students are advised to familiarize themselves with the procedures or other instructions for final theses in their department. In accordance with Article 54 of the University of Iceland Regulations No. 569/2009, a student who intends to graduate from the University of Iceland must submit an electronic copy of their final theses to Skemman. The library's journal list
A complete catalog of subscription-based electronic journals. In addition, there is access to various journals that are available in open access. You can search for both journal titles and individual journal articles.

Turnitin
The software Turnitin supports feedback from teachers to students regarding academic writing, citations and reference use. An agreement on the use of Turnitin by all higher education institutions and universities is in force until the end of 2025, and Lbs-Hbs is responsible for its implementation. Hilma Gunnarsdóttir is the Turnitin project manager and Sigurbjörg Jóhannesdóttir, teaching consultant for university education at the University of Iceland Teaching Centre, is responsible for the Icelandic access to Turnitin.

Loan and return
All individuals aged 18 and over, with a legal address in Iceland and an Icelandic ID number, can borrow books from the National and University Library of Iceland. Books and other materials are loaned out at service desks on the 2nd and 4th floors. There is also a self-service machine on the 2nd floor. The loan period is usually 30 days. Some materials are loaned for a shorter period, for example materials in the Course reserve, which is located on the 4th floor. Teachers at the University of Iceland can request that materials in the Course reserve be for use only in the library or loaned for 1 to 7 days. Films are loaned for 3 days. If the material is not available in the library, it can be ordered from another library on interlibrary loan for a fee. Students and employees of the University of Iceland receive a 50% discount on this service. All materials on loan must be returned to the service desk on the 2nd floor. Overview of the loan service.

Training in connection with project work
For all students at the University of Iceland at any time during the study period. The training is linked to project work in individual courses and students are taught to search for sources in connection with it. The training can take place both on the premises of the library in the National Library or teachers can book a librarian in advance, send a request for training.
Training and presentations
The museum offers a variety of educational and presentation services aimed at increasing information literacy and academic work skills. This service is for students of the University of Iceland, but we also try to accommodate requests from other groups for visits and presentations, request a presentation.
Basic introduction for first-year students with a focus on academic subjects
Work facilities and services available to students are introduced, along with the main sources of information. Search techniques are discussed, lbs.leitir.is, the Lbs-Hbs website and leiðarvísar.is. Doctoral theses, submitted to Opin vísindi
Doctoral students can submit an electronic copy of their doctoral thesis to the Opin vísindi repository, see instructions. Doctoral theses must have an ISBN number. An ISBN number must be applied for. Authors are also encouraged to apply for an ORCID identifier. The ISBN and ORCID should appear on the back of the title page of the doctoral thesis along with other bibliographic information.
EndNote – individual assistance
Lbs-Hbs offers doctoral students at the University of Iceland the opportunity to book individual EndNote support with the library's experts. Individual support is designed for those who use EndNote but need help with specific issues/problems.

Article service
Interlibrary loan staff photocopy or scan articles and book chapters from the library's publications. You do not need a library card to use this service. The article service is available for a fee, see the Library Services Fee Schedule. Students and employees of the University of Iceland receive a 50% discount on this service.

Information service specialists perform source searches for a fee, see the Library Services Fee Schedule. In general, a source search can be expected to take four hours. This service is not intended for students. They are offered guidance in source searches.
ISBN number
The library oversees the operation of the international book numbering system in Iceland. Allocation is free of charge to publishers.

Article Processing Charges (APC)
Article Processing Charges (APC) are fees that publishers charge authors for publishing articles in open access. These fees vary by publisher. Publication is either in a subscription journal, in which case the article in question is in open access, but other articles in the journal may be in closed access (hybrid gold access) or in a journal that is entirely in open access. All publishers allow publication of manuscripts (pre-print or post-print) in repositories such as Opin vísindi, but with varying publication delays (see more). Information on the publication policies of individual journals, publication delays and which versions of articles can be stored in repositories is available from SherpaRomeo.

Dewey Classification System, WebDewey
The library manages a nationwide subscription to WebDewey, which is the online Dewey classification system. The library handles all administration, finances, and assigns passwords.
DOI number
DOI numbers are permanent electronic identifiers for journal articles and other materials published electronically on the Internet. By attaching a DOI number to articles, a permanent and easily findable URL on the Internet is guaranteed, even if the traditional URL changes. Publishers of academic journals can apply for DOI numbers for articles in their journals through the library by filling out a form. It is recommended that publishers apply for DOI numbers just before the publication of a new issue. Note that all information about an article must be available, as well as a link to each article. Gegnis Registrar's Manual (HASK)
The Gegnir Registrar's Manual (HASK) covers all bibliographic registration in Gegnir, registration of Icelandic and foreign materials, regardless of the format. The manual is intended to promote high-quality and coordinated work practices. Its users are the registrars of libraries that are members of Gegnir. Suggestions about the manual can be sent to hask@landsbokasafn.is.

Lykilskrá, subject headings in Gegnir
The museum maintains the Gegnir subject and personal name index. The subject entries are based on the Systematic Subject Index and with the amendments that have been approved by the Subject Council. Suggestions for new subject entries can be sent to efnisordarad@landskerfi.is.
Registration in Gegnir
Library employees can send inquiries about anything related to registration and Gegnir in general, to gegnir@landsbokasafn.is. The Gegnir mail is not only for library employees, but anyone, whether they are in the country or abroad, can send inquiries or point out things that could be improved.
Registration service
The library undertakes to catalogue the collection for smaller libraries where resources are limited. This involves classification, registration and linking in Gegnir. ISMN number
The library is responsible for assigning ISMN numbers for Icelandic sheet music publications.
ISSN number
ISSN numbers are assigned to newspapers, magazines, serials and yearbooks. It is advisable to apply for an ISSN number for new magazines before the first issue is published.
Rafhlaðan, an electronic archive
The Rafhlaða archive preserves and provides access to published works by Icelanders in electronic form. Electronic material can be submitted for preservation in the Rafhlaða archive here: Electronic submission.
